Public health graduate channels passions for language and health equity

Layla Babahaji is no stranger to community assistance — she gained the Trailblazer Award, the Leader in Provider Award and the Gifford Darling Reiss Newcomb Award for her dedication to others past calendar year at the time of her graduation from the University of General public Overall health and Tropical Medicine, with a Bachelor of Science in General public Health. This year she will gain a master’s degree from the Faculty of Public Wellbeing as effectively.

Growing up in Dallas, Babahaji spoke four languages at home — English, French, Spanish and Farsi. With moms and dads from Iran and Morocco, she understood the effect of language proficiency in migrant populations, significantly in health care configurations. She failed to know specifically how to channel her well being equity interests right up until getting public health and fitness at Tulane.

During her 2nd and fourth many years, Babahaji labored in the Centre for General public Support as a services mastering assistant. She coordinated support discovering classes for Tulane college students, connecting them with French immersion universities in New Orleans.

Babahaji was also a public provider fellow, the place she continued functioning with the exact same NGO and commenced providing translation services for the immigrant group in New Orleans.

By this experience, she recognized she wanted to proceed pursuing her passion to encourage well being equity amid migrant communities and use her language abilities to help empower them.

This summer season, Babahaji will full her graduate practicum in Morocco in advance of returning to Tulane to formally obtain a Learn of General public Wellbeing diploma at the school’s graduation ceremony in December.

“I’m extremely open up to anything at all that meshes my passion for community health and fitness, migration, healthcare obtain and equity,” Babahaji reported. “I’m hoping to keep in New Orleans to get the job done with area communities prior to working internationally.”
